History of the Vondelpark

During the 19th century a group of citizens gathered funds and bought hectares of grassy land and set on a mission to create a large park. The park was designed by architect L.D Zocher.

The park was opened in 1865. At first it was only open to members of the club and for a small fee to other members of the public for horse riding and hiking.

It was in 1877 that the park took its current name and its final 40 hectares size. Throughout the years playgrounds were created, paths for cyclists, rose gardens, monuments and the open air theatre.

The location of the park, between Leidseplein and Museumplein,  makes it right at the centre of the city, with some even calling it “the lungs of the city”.

.Why not book a flight and visit the beautiful city of Amsterdam and enjoy a true English style garden in Vondelpark. Don´t forget your bicycle!
